A Trip to Ancient Carthage

Ancient Ruins of Carthage (Site Archeologique de Carthage) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in what is now Tunisia, Northern Africa. Carthage was the Phoenician world power in 600-200 BC with the largest military force and one of the most important trading hubs of the ancient Mediterranean. It was constantly at war with the Greeks or the Romans. The Roman Empire was eager to expand its territory, and launched several attacks on Carthage known as the Punic Wars.  Carthage was defeated by the Romans in 146 BC, and Rome emerged as the dominant Mediterranean power and one of the most powerful cities.

Here is way more information about Carthage, so please enjoy reading about its history.

A tour of the ancient city of Carthage is very interesting because it’s one of the few places where we can see the remains of a defeated culture. Most conquering empires destroy evidence of their enemies, and Rome was no different. They built their city over the ruins of the former Carthage city, but with excavation, we are able to see history. Tunisia is not easy to get around, so it might be worth hiring a tour guide, not only to include the entrance fee but also to explain all the details of what you are exploring. There are cemeteries, a chapel, tombs, cisterns, and the largest Roman baths outside of Rome itself.

There is so much more that Tunisia has to offer. If you have time, go explore the city of Tunis, travel to the desert to see Kairouan, which is the most ancient Arabo-Muslim base and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, or El Jem, which has the largest colosseum in North Africa, take a tour of the filming locations from Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope, or enjoy the coastal cities of Sidi Bou Said, Sousse or Hammamet Beach.
